Minister Plato to conduct second youth safety outreach in Nyanga

MEDIA ALERT:

Tomorrow, Tuesday 17 February 2015, Western Cape Minister of Community Safety, Dan Plato, together with officials from the Department of Community Safety, will conduct another youth safety outreach in Nyanga.

Together with the help of the Neighbourhood Watch, Community Policing Forum and the South African Police Service (SAPS), Minister Plato and officials will seek to assess and help address problems of safety and drug abuse, particularly among the youth, as well as inform and engage with parents about their role and responsibility towards their children’s safety and education.

Following the success of last week’s visit to Zwelitsha in Nyanga, Minister Plato will tomorrow visit the Brown’s Farm area of Nyanga to extend the same opportunities and engagements there. Last week in Nyanga, Minister Plato and the Department of Community Safety engaged with more than 300 youths on their safety concerns and took the particulars of more than 200 youth to assist them in applying for further education and training opportunities. More than 50 applications have already been received.

The outreach serves as an interpersonal platform where government can inform communities about the various programmes that exist within the Department of Community Safety to create safer communities, as well as the basket of services available to the public from the Western Cape Government and various civil society organisations and partners.

There will be an opportunity for photographs and interviews.
