Premier’s new Director-General carries the weight of the province

DA Gauteng Provincial Leader:

The Democratic Alliance in Gauteng notes the appointment of Ms Phindile Baleni as the new director general in the office of the Premier.

Before joining the Premier’s office, Mrs Baleni held the post of CEO at the National Energy Regulator of South Africa, prior to that she was the a legal advisor to the then Gauteng MEC for Housing and Local Government from 1994 to 1996, as well as having served as the executive director of Contract Management for the City of Jo’burg in 2001.

The Premier must be commended for attracting a competent individual to tackle the challenges faced by his office, but it remains to be seen how much freedom Ms Baleni will enjoy from political interference.

With just over a year to go before the ANC faces its toughest local government elections yet, on issues such as divisive and unjust e-tolls, backlogs in housing, delayed infrastructure development, corruption and unacceptably high levels of crime, Ms Baleni will certainly have her work cut out to improve the plight of Gauteng’s residents.

The DA wishes Ms Baleni the best of luck in her new position as she deals with the complex and multiple challenges facing the province.
