DA Gauteng Spokesperson on Petitions:

The third quarterly report tabled by the Gauteng Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) portfolio committee reveals that the Randfontein Municipality has failed to spend 70% of its allocated infrastructure grant.

Last week, residents of Mohlakeng in Randfontein took to the streets to vent their frustration with the municipality as they have still not yet received basic services – despite assurances that the matter would be resolved.

ANC officials tried to shift blame for last week’s protests, however, it is evident that this protest – and others like it, stem from the ANC’s inability to effectively enact sound financial management and controls where they govern.

It is baffling that funds allocated to assist the communities and improve the lives of residents are not spent.

The DA calls on Gauteng MEC for COGTA and Human Settlements, Jacob Mamabolo, to act sternly and to take a decisive line against underperforming municipalities, which have become center’s of service delivery protests.

A failure to do so will perpetuate the cycle of residents being denied basic services.
