Jane Sithole, MPL
Spokesperson on Public Works, Roads and Transport:
The DA is saddened at the news that 8 people were killed, when a taxi overturned on the D2740 road between Seabe and Nokaneng.
The injured were taken to Mmametlhake hospital shortly after the accident happened on Tuesday.
Initial reports indicate that the taxi overturned due to a massive pothole on the road. We offer our sincere condolences to the families of the victims. Our thoughts and prayers will be with them at this difficult time.
Incidents like these should not be happening and should be avoided at all cost. We must do everything in our power to limit the number of accidents and deaths on our roads. In particular, we must redouble our efforts to increase safety measures on our roads.
The DA urges the MEC for Public Works, Roads and Transport, Ms Dumisile Nhlengethwa to give urgent attention to the condition of this road. Potholes cannot be left unattended as they become a serious death-trap on our roads.
Specific attention should be given to Provincial roads to enhance the safety of all motorists.
The DA would also like to plead with taxi drivers to drive with caution as they carry people’s lives. These two measures should go hand in hand in ensuring that our people are safe on our roads.
