On Monday, 23 March 2015, DA Shadow Minister of Water and Sanitation, Nosimo Balindlela MP and DA Mpumalanga Leader, James Masango MP and other DA Mpumalanga Provincial and Municipal leaders will conduct an oversight visit to the Bushbuckridge Local Municipality to assess levels of water quality and supply in the rural communities of Majembeni and Casteel.
Four weeks ago just outside of Casteel village – where taps are dry – a young boy was shot dead while protesting for water. 15 year old Lucas Lebyane was shot by the police when protesters from Casteel village blockaded the R40 with rocks and burning tyres demanding that the municipality provide the community with water. Another boy from the same village was shot in the leg, but was not hospitalised.
Residents in Majembeni claim that they have not had water since October last year and are forced to share dirty water with animals from a polluted river.
The ANC government is failing to deliver basic services to South Africans, of which water shortages are affecting millions of South Africans and violates their most basic human rights. In light of the looming water crisis we are facing as a nation, Nosimo Balindlela MP, will embark on an access to water oversight tour across the country to highlight the plight of South Africans without good quality running water.
Date: 23 March 2015
Media Meeting Point: Members of the media will meet at the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature in Nelspruit and then be driven to 343 Magamsini Village, Casteel, Bushbuckridge
