DA welcomes 75 year prison term for Freedom Day Gang Rapists

Katlego Suzan Phala (MPL)

DA Spokesperson on Women, Youth and Disability:

The DA MPL and Spokesperson on Women, Youth and Disability Hon. Suzan Phala welcomes the 75 year sentence imposed on gang-rapists by Naphuno Regional Court.
The gang, notoriously known as the “Freedom Day Rapists” aged between 24 and 26 brutally raped a minor girl on Freedom Day in 2012 and were arrested shortly after the incident.

The DA is however concerned that this matter dragged on in court for almost three years.
We call on the justice department to expedite sexual offences matters especially those cases which involve minor victims.

The DA will ask written questions to the MEC for Safety Security and Liaison and Roads Mapula Mukaba to obtain information of the turnaround times and conviction rates of sexual offences cases, as well as the state of victim friendly facilities in our courts.
The life of this victim will never be the same and her ordeal should not be compounded by an unnecessarily lengthy trial and lack of services to victims of crime
