FS Health Crisis: SAHRC Report expected soon

DA MPL in the Free State Provincial Legislature:

The DA yesterday received communication from the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) that it has concluded its investigation into the Free State Department of Health for failure to uphold its constitutional mandate to deliver quality and equitable health services to those who need it. The report is said to be in the process of being finalised.

We first approached the SAHRC to investigate the department in June last year after Health MEC, Dr Benny Malakoane, and Premier Ace Magashule, failed to acknowledge that public health services in the province are in crisis.

Interestingly, both the national Departments of Labour and Public Service and Administration have investigated the department and their respective reports are said to be tabled in Parliament shortly.

Preliminary media reports on these investigations corroborate the DA’s findings, who have waged a difficult battle to ensure delivery of quality public healthcare in the province, for almost two years now.

The DA anxiously awaits the tabling of these reports.

The DA in the Free State have campaigned tirelessly for MEC Malakoane to be fired. We trust that these numerous reports will motivate Premier Magashule to finally admit his failure in appointing Benny Malakoane to his executive.

We are hoping for a new start for public health in the Free State. The people of this province deserve better.
