Ga-Sekgopo looting: DA calls for calm

Katlego Suzan Phala (MPL)

DA Spokesperson on Safety and Security:

The DA condemns yesterday’s acts of looting, violence and eviction against foreign shop owners in Ga Sekgopo Village in Greater Letaba Municipality.

This week the DA will conduct thorough community consultation to gather information on the situation.

This comes after the local community took the law into their own hands yesterday and forcefully removed all foreign shop owners in 11 villages in the area.

The DA calls upon the community to restore calm and order, to not take the law into their own hands and to respect our Constitutional protections against discrimination.

The DA calls upon the Limpopo Police Commissioner, Lt.Gen. Fanie Masemola, to ensure sufficient police presence in the area and to clamp down on any further violence, looting and destruction of property to ensure that peace and stability is restored.

Limpopo Safety and Security MEC Phukwane must initiate plans to protect foreign nationals and their business interests.

The DA will closely monitor this situation and will push for action from both the Police and the Provincial Government.
