Ann McDonnell, MPL
DA KZN Spokesperson on Conservation and Environmental Affairs:
Letter to the Editor
IT is indeed a pleasure to see that the development of a resort in the isiMangaliso Wetland Park had been halted by a High Court action.
The DA congratulates the Department of Environmental Affairs and the Park authority for holding the developers to account for any project within this iconic Heritage site.
“It is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission” is an attitude that thrives to the detriment of our environmental assets.
Sadly, it is a stance that has been made more possible with compliance monitoring often lacking. Extra shafts sunk in a coal mine without approval and drainage of a wetland are but two examples in our province.
Authorities must continue to send out the message that such flagrant disregard for our natural heritage will be nipped in the bud.
