DA KZN Spokesperson on Community Safety:

THE appointment of the KZN police commissioner, Mmamonnye Ngobeni’s husband, Lucas Ngobeni, as Cluster Commander of Pietermaritzburg reeks of political meddling and nepotism.

As members of the KZN Community Safety portfolio committee, the DA will call for the Commissioner to divulge the process used to make this appointment including details on the methodology and scoring used.  This is critical given that there appear to have been other more suitable candidates for this position.

Of particular concern are the claims by members of the Pietermaritzburg Cluster that they were not made aware of the appointment.  This oversight has had a negative effect on police morale in the area which in turn has led to reduced service delivery and higher crime levels.

Then there is the fact that, despite the commencement date for his new job having come and gone, the new Cluster Commander is yet to report for duty.

Given this information, the portfolio committee must be given the opportunity to determine whether Ngobeni has in fact been parachuted into this role.
