Cllr. Phillip Masombuka
DA councillor in Thembisile Hani local municipality:
The DA in Thembisile Hani municipality is highly concerned about the closure of schools on the 11th of March due to a SADTU meeting that was scheduled for the day at Solomon Mahlangu Stadium in KwaMhlanga.
Parents were informed that learners will be released at 9:30 in the morning.
The DA cannot sit idle and allow a situation where education is brought to a stand-still due to a meeting that could have been scheduled to take place at the weekend rather than a school day.
In the interest of education for our children, it is not fair that children must spend a day loitering at home while their teachers are attending a meeting or a forum. If SADTU is acting in the interest of learners, then they should not schedule such events on school days.
The DA would like to appeal with SADTU to schedule such meetings or forums over weekends or school holidays, not to disrupt our children’s education. SADTU’s actions are detrimental to our children’s education and it is indeed worrying.
Teachers are caretakers and champions of education and they should do their utmost best to ensure each learner is successful in his or her own right. With actions such as this, our children’s education is compromised by the very same people who should be championing the course of education.
We will ask our colleagues at the provincial legislature to urgently write to education MEC, Reginah Mahule, asking why this is allowed to happen, and to request her intervention in this matter to ensure that no school is interrupted by union meetings’
