Situation at Ogies Community Health Centre has moved from bad to worse in recent years

Motion without notice by Jane Sithole MPL, Spokesperson on Health, in the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature on 20 November 2014:

Hon. Speaker

I rise to move a motion without notice on behalf of the Democratic Alliance, noting that:

The situation at the Ogies Community Health Centre in Ogies right here in eMalahleni has moved from bad to worse in recent years.  Hon. Speaker, the staff and patients at this clinic are forced to relieve themselves in the nearby bush due to pipes that are blocked, rendering the toilet facilities unusable.

Further noting Hon. Speaker, this has been going on for the past five years to date.  If you visit this health facility Hon. Speaker, you will be shocked to say the least.

The DA acknowledges and welcomes the Premier’s announcement to address staff shortages in all our health facilities across the Province. Hon. Speaker, apart from overcrowding, the Ogies clinic is operating in crisis mode.

Further noting Hon. Speaker that there is only one Nurse who sees hundreds of patients daily. She is also expected to do the cleaning and the capturing of data at the same time.

I move that this house,

  1. Compel the department of health to appoint a plumber to sort out the mess that is going on at Ogies Clinic.
  2. Urge the department of health to appoint a grounds man with immediate effect to deal with the bushveld that has grown outside this clinic.
  3. That the department of health appoint an admin clerk and a cleaner to assist the only Nursing Sister that is currently working at this clinic
  4. Ensures that the department of health does not continue to violate the basic rights of patients at this clinic

I so move.
