Sundays River Valley mayor resigns over service delivery failure

Karen Smith,

DA Whip – Sundays River Valley Municipality:

In a special council meeting today, the ANC Mayor of Sundays River Valley Municipality, councillor Mbulele Kebe resigned from his position as mayor and councillor Zolile A. Lose was elected as the new mayor.

This is in the wake of the devastating service delivery protest that we experienced in Kirkwood towards the end of 2014 where municipal buildings and equipment was torched and service delivery grinded to a halt, under the leadership of mayor Kebe.

The DA calls on mayor Lose to restore service delivery and to immediately release the report from the MEC’s office regarding irregular expenditure.  The community was promised this report within 30 days, then October 2014, which has still not materialised.

It is alarming that a municipality the size of Sundays River Valley can write off an amount of R84.5 million. We cannot allow critical services such as the provision of clean drinking water, sanitation and other basic services to be compromised due to irregular expenditure.

The DA is committed to an open, transparent and accountable government.  We will continue to hold the ANC led council accountable whilst we continue our fight for the residents of Sundays River Valley.
