Safiyia Stanfley, MPL
DA Provincial Spokesperson on Gender, Youth & Persons with Disabilities:
The Democratic Alliance notes with dismay today’s postponement of the rape trial of the four learners from the Hoër Landbouskool in Jan Kempdorp.
Almost two months have now passed since the brutal rape and assault on school premises.
On 15 May 2015, when the accused appear again, we call for the investigation to be complete and a trial date to be set.
This case is an immense shame to our nation and to reconciliation in our country – the longer this matter is dragged through the courts, the harder it is for the victim and for the community to come to terms with what happened.
Justice must be done, for the sake of the victim who needs closure.
There should be no further delays in this case.
We also call on the school governing body to finalise the internal disciplinary proceedings, which have been delayed to allow for legal representation. We welcome the due process being followed in the proceedings, especially since a criminal act has been committed, but due processes cannot be used as an excuse to slow down justice.
