Disrespect shown to religious leaders of minority groups at KZN peace imbizo

By: George Mari, MPL Democratic Alliance KZN Legislature AS a participant at the recent Peace Imbizo, led by his Majesty King Zwelithini, I was absolutely disgusted by the arrogance and insensitivity displayed by some members of the public. This included booing religious leaders from minority groups during the offering of prayers. A case in point was the disrespect shown to Indian community leader, Ashwin Trikamjee, who also had to endure hostile gestures from certain sections of the crowd. This event was a significant occasion to promote peace following the recent horrific acts of Xenophobia against our African brothers and sisters. The contempt shown to minority group religious leaders must be condemned in the strongest possible terms. Equally disturbing was the KZN government leadership’s failure to speak out against such behaviour. Those who failed to act include KZN Premier Senzo Mchunu. South Africans have been led down the dark and dangerous path of Xenophobia by a criminal element. Our country has been shamed by this barbaric behaviour. In order to restore peace there must be tolerance and a sense of compassion for those affected by these tragic events. The DA extends its heartfelt thanks to Ashwin Trikamjee for his efforts to remind us of this at this difficult time. The Indian Community condemns Xenophobia in the strongest possible terms. We remind our fellow South Africans that our country belongs to all who live in it. We must stand together as we pray for peace and unity in our land.
