FS Agriculture MEC: Ace dallies for two months

By: Roy Jankielsohn Leader of the Official Opposition in the Free State Provincial Legislature The Free State Provincial Department of Agriculture and Land Reform has been left without an MEC for almost two months. The former MEC, Mamiki Qabathe, was elected Speaker of the Provincial Legislature on 11 March 2015. Agriculture forms the lifeblood of our provincial economy and is the socio-economic anchor of rural communities. The sector contributes 4.3% to our provincial GDP while it delivers 12% of all jobs in the province. The sector in the province also contributes more than most other provinces to national food security. This important department deserves its own MEC. There is no doubt that the delay will have a negative impact on the department. We understand that Premier Ace Magashule is between a rock and a hard place to take a decision with regards to the appointment, since he has to manoeuvre in such a manner so as to secure and entrench his support base and patronage network. This is another perfect example of how the ANC’s internal party politics negatively impact on political governance in the Free State.
