FS Education still unable to pay school subsidies

By: Mariette Pittaway MPL DA MPL in the Free State Provincial Legislature The Free State Provincial Department of Education is still unable to pay out subsidies to schools in the province. The DA randomly selected 30 schools across the Free State and found that 10 schools have not received their quarterly subsidies since October last year, an additional six have not been paid subsidies since January, and three schools claimed that they have only received partial payments of their subsidies. These results indicate that more than 50% of schools dependent on subsidies have been abandoned by the department. The failure by the department to timeously pay out school subsidies negatively impact on the ability of schools to deliver quality education. The DA has long maintained that the poor financial management within the department under the leadership of MEC Tate Makgoe negatively impacts on the performance of our schools and learners. The department racked up more than R1,3 billion in accruals and have to date not tabled nor implemented a strategy to remedy the situation. MEC Tate Makgoe would rather see his department spend R143 million on catering and entertainment expenses than use that money to improve and assist our schools in the Free State. Failure to pay these subsidies is a grave injustice against our learners and compromises the future of our province and the country at large. It’s a disgrace for which MEC Tate Makgoe must accept full responsibility.
