Gauteng government falls short on employing the disabled

By: Refiloe Nt’sekhe MPL (@RefiloeNtsekhe) DA Gauteng Shadow MEC for Social Development The Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) needs to take a more holistic approach to it recruitment strategy for people with disabilities, by providing internships and further training to deserving candidates. A written response from acting Premier and Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu revealed that the Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) only employs 2466 people with disabilities, or 1,5% of all government employees. According to the response only five of Gauteng’s 14 departments achieved the national 2% target. This is disappointing considering Disabled People of South Africa (DPSA) figures show that 14% of South Africans live with disabilities. In an open opportunity society it should be easy for a provincial government to have 2% of its total workforce be people living with disabilities. However, lack of access to specialised education and services, only served to further marginalise some of our country’s most vulnerable people. Employing people with disabilities is not merely a box-ticking exercise, but a form of empowering those who have to suffer far more discrimination that any other member of our society. This despite the Premier indicating that vacancies are advertised through the Gauteng online website and national newspapers, these methods have proved ineffective as employment figures remain low. As such, empowering the disabled requires an extensive approach that starts long before the application for employment is considered. It starts by establishing special schools, enforcing physical access at all places of learning and employment, and by using talent identification and special training programmes to bring more disabled people into the workplace. The DA will continue to monitor the situation and push for such specialised programmes in the portfolio committees and in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, and give hope where little hope existed before.
