Govan Mbeki municipality must account for its Eskom debt

By: James Masango MP DA Mpumalanga Leader Govan Mbeki municipality must account for its Eskom debt The Democratic Alliance in Govan Mbeki Municipality will urgently put questions to Mayor Lindi Masina on how the municipality is so indebted to Eskom that it faces brutal power cuts from June 2015, and where money collected through electricity tariffs has been channelled. Govan Mbeki will be among 20 of the worst South African municipal debtors to Eskom who face this increased load shedding from June. Govan Mbeki municipality has one of the highest potential revenue collection rates in Mpumalanga. It therefore comes as a surprise that this municipality has been earmarked as one of 20 to have their electricity connection cut by Eskom. The proposed power cuts will have a devastating impact on the mining industry, from which the bulk of Govan Mbeki’s revenue is collected. The jobs of thousands of community members employed in this sector will be lost. The majority of households in Govan Mbeki use prepaid electricity which begs the question of why the municipality does not simply transfer electricity funds collected, to Eskom. Where is the money? If the municipality is unable to pay Eskom, perhaps it should allow its consumers to buy electricity directly from Eskom to minimise the chances of the money generated from selling electricity not reaching Eskom. Govan Mbeki municipality’s executive mayor, Cllr Lindi Masina must immediately intervene to ensure that the municipality’s electricity is not cut by Eskom. Mayor Masina must answer: * What are the reasons for being in arrears with Eskom’s electricity? * How much is the municipal monthly income from electricity? * How much do the municipality pay Eskom per month? * How many households have no prepaid electricity and why? * Why do our municipality cut people’s electricity if they are not paying Eskom the money payed for electricity? The community must not be held accountable for the municipality’s inability to lead and its failure to effectively manage its finances.
