Minister Nhleko fails to attend NCOP Public Hearings

By: Mark Wiley, MPP Chief Whip of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament The National Minister of police has shown the people of Oudtshoorn that he is not interested in their safety. Neither Minister Nkosinathi Nhleko nor his deputy attended a NCOP public hearing where they would be answerable to the community members of the Eden district on the topics of policing and justice. They attended a parliamentary questions session instead. Only the Minister of Community Safety in the Western Cape, Dan Plato, made it a point to attend the public hearing on policing. However, the SAPS is not under the control of the Western Cape Government (WCG). This means that Minister Nhleko and his deputy are the only people able to answer to the community on policing matters. The community has raised serious complaints and concerns today. They complained that SAPS officers visit friends while on duty – neglecting their critical role. The SAPS officers also often take two hours or more to respond to emergency calls – by which time violent incidents have escalated drastically. Although the WCG has a limited scope of oversight over the SAPS, it runs various projects that operate in support of the SAPS. The Western Cape Department of Community Safety is doing its utmost to ensure the safety of the people of the Western Cape via support projects. However, Minister Nhleko and his deputy were absent from the public hearing, which forms part of ‘taking parliament to the people,’ as arranged by the National Council of Provinces. This forum was intended for community members to air their views directly to the Ministers and other members of government, who are able to address the concerns raised. This blatant disregard for the safety of community members is indicative of what the ANC and National government think of public safety. The ANC showed today that they chose the President over the people, by using the fact that the President is answering questions in the National Assembly as excuse not be account for the state of national affairs.
