New Health Deputy DG, Sipho Mtakati, does not inspire confidence

DA MPL in the Free State Provincial Legislature:

The DA has learned with concern that the former Masilonyana Local Municipality Municipal Manager, Sipho Mtakati, has been appointed to the provincial Department of Health in the capacity of Deputy Director-General.

During Sipho Mtakati’s tenure as Municipal Manager, residents experienced a collapse in service delivery, erratic and polluted piped water supply. The municipality have received consecutive qualified with findings annual audit reports.

The Masilonyana Local Municipality can be considered dysfunctional and is one of the 15 worst performing municipalities in the Free State.

The DA opened a criminal case under the National Water Act (No 36 of 1998) against him in August last year for failure to prevent the discharge of sewerage into fresh water sources.

Considering Mtakati’s poor performance and lack of leadership as a Municipal Manager, we are not convinced that he is a right fit for the provincial Department of Health, which itself is a dysfunctional department under the arrogant and poor leadership of MEC Malakoane.

This is yet another perfect example of how the ANC’s cadre deployment in the Free State erodes good governance, undermines accountability and prevents the delivery of services to our people.
