ANC man attempts to run DA MP over

By Jacques Smalle (MPL), DA Limpopo Provincial Leader:

The DA has laid a criminal charge of attempted murder and criminal injuria with Tubatse police (CAS 36/5/2015) against an ANC activist and Tubatse Municipality employee, Eddie Maile, after he insulted and nearly drove over a DA MP, Beyers Smit with his car during the by-election held in Tubatse Ward 18 yesterday.

It is alleged that ANC councillors and activists were handing out ANC t-shirts and campaigning at the entrance of the Mafemane Primary school voting station in Burgersfort when the incident occurred.

Whilst Smit was busy capturing the whole incident on his cellphone, Mr Maile and his mob stormed and started to intimidate and insult him.

Maile then swiftly got into his car and tried to run Smit over, but fortunately Smit managed to escape without serious injury

It is against the IEC regulations to campaign within the boundaries of the voting station specifically on election day.

The DA is taking this issue seriously, finds it very distasteful and believes that the matter deserves to be investigated urgently.

It is completely unacceptable for the ANC to abuse their powers and to use underhanded tactics to intimidate our activists and MP’s and to disregard the IEC regulations in order to win votes.

The DA will further write to the Provincial Electoral Officer of IEC, Nkaro Mateta, to urgently probe the incident to ensure that steps are taken against the ANC.
