By Sizwe Mchunu, MPL, Leader to the DA in the KZN Legislature:
THE DA has today been briefed by KZN SAPS regarding an investigation into the fire which gutted our Legislature office building in September last year.
While we appreciate the efforts of SAPS members assigned to this case, there are regrettably no new leads in what is now considered both an arson and theft investigation.
We have been promised a progress report on this matter in the next month and remain committed to establishing who is behind this despicable act.
This unpleasant incident has highlighted the day-to-day safety of all who serve in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature.
The fact that there were two different fires within the precinct within a small period of time should ring alarm bells for those who are responsible for the safety and security of this complex.
The DA will today write to KZN Speaker, Lydia Johnson, to request a full audit into the Legislature work environment, which must include security measures that are currently in place.
Moving forward, there is a very real need to secure the physical structures as well as the safety and welfare of all who work in the Legislature.
