DA to lay charges over illegal transportation of deadly acid

By Langa Bodlani (MPL), Limpopo Spokesperson on Economic Development, Environment and Tourism:

The Democratic Alliance will this morning lay criminal charges of among others that of illegal transportation of Sulphuric Acid at the Modimolle Police station.

The unlawful transportation of this acid came to light after the truck carrying the highly corrosive strong mineral acid, got involved in an accident and spilled the acid into a river, leaving shoals of fish dead and other stray animals that drank the water from the river.

The DA has it on good authority that the truck that carried at least 28 000 litres of this deadly acid was not insured to transport this load.

A Chemical company on site has confirmed that several kilometers of the river has been affected and the substance is likely to cause more harm to any life that comes to contact with the affected water. This could include live stock and humans.

After lack of response by both Waterberg District and Modimolle Local Municipalities, the DA engaged Limpopo MEC for Economic Development, Environment and Tourism Seaparo Sekoati who agreed to setup a task team from his office to start managing the crisis.
