Limpopo new MECs must hit the ground running

By Jacques Smalle, MPL, DA Limpopo Leader:

The Democratic Alliance in Limpopo has noted the changes made to the provincial government’s executive council by Premier Stan Mathabatha earlier today.

These long overdue changes come at the time when some provincial departments are at the verge of collapse. The DA hopes that the newly appointed members of the executive will not shy away from making bold moves to save the ailing departments.

We welcome Dr. Phophi Ramathuba’s appointment as Health MEC, where her academic and management record must be used towards rescuing the department from endless challenges it has faced over the years.

The appointment of MEC Ishmael Kgetjepe to education is also welcomed. His open door policy shown over the years gives much hope that he will be able to rebuild the collapsed systems of the department. MEC Kgetjepe will have his hands full under this embattled department. We encourage him to immediately make critical changes that could reflect positive change in his short term targets. School infrastructure is at its worst ever, school textbooks remain a Limpopo embarrassment and school sanitation is neglected.

The DA welcomes back to the portfolio of provincial treasury, MEC Rob Tooley, who comes in with vast experience. We hope there will soon be financial stability and transparency in Limpopo’s finances under MEC Tooley.

A big surprise is the axing of Rudolph Phala.

With these appointments to the executive, the DA calls for the appointments of full time HOD’s and CFO’s. This will accelerate service delivery and pave the way for government accountability.

A new Executive team must take up the reigns and work tirelessly to deliver to the people of Limpopo.
