ANC Cllr stops electricity for poor families

By Anza Van Vuuren DA councillor at Greater Tzaneen Local Municipality:

Today, the DA has written a letter to Cassius Machimana, the Speaker of Greater Tzaneen Municipality, requesting him to take action against ANC ward councillor in ward 11, Lettie Hlangwani, for stopping Eskom from installing electricity in a residence because the residents are not active members of the ANC.

Cllr Hlangwani allegedly abused her powers by ordering Eskom officials who were busy installing electricity in Fobeni Village to omit those who are not card-carrying ANC members and those failing to participate in ANC activities.

As a result, some families were removed from the Eskom list, following the Councillor’s instructions.

It is clear that Cllr Hlangwani abused her powers and interfered with this community project by prioritising only those who are affiliated with the ANC.

It is an infringement of families’ right to freedom of political association and the right to get the basic services.

This is a pure violation of human rights and disregards the Constitution of the country.

The DA believes that the councillor must urgently be summoned to the Rules and Ethics Committee and be charged with misconduct for abusing her powers.

We will further engage Eskom to reverse the decision and install the electricity to the affected families.

The DA urges the Speaker to launch an internal investigation and enforce discipline within the municipality.
