DA exposing of mine’s harmful effects leads to license decline

By Beyers Smit (MP), DA Constituency Head for Mogalakwena:

DA welcomes the Department of Mineral Resources’s decision to decline the application for the Volspruit mine next to the ecologically sensitive Nyl river just outside of Mokopane.

The DA believes in economic growth through growing industries, and sustainable mining – but not at the cost of our environment.

This mine had massive potential to further pollute the sensitive Nyl Rivier – the river was polluted after a horrific incident of sulphuric acid spillage about a month ago.

This mine would have been a disaster as its drainage would have been right at the cross of the Nyl River and the Zebediela Fault Line; a massive integrated water system that is the primary source of water for the communities from Zebediela to Modimolle and Rebone and also agricultural operations along the same area.

This is a victory for the citizens after the DA and other community forums exposed the environmental impact of this planned mine.
