By Erna Rossouw, DA Ward Councillor, Madibeng, North West:
The DA has today requested an urgent meeting with Jostine Mothiba, Mayor of Madibeng, on the disconnection of illegal electricity connections in Sunway near Hartbeespoort Dam, and resulting protests.
The DA believes that every home must progressively be connected to the electricity grid, for the dignity of our residents, to live safely, to cook, to study and to work.
Residents in Sunway have been forced to make illegal connections to supply their homes with power, as the municipality continues to neglect them and deny them this right.
The DA has warned against these illegal connections and urged the mayor and ANC councillors to give this community access to proper electricity and basic services. These connections that are made to the Tshwane transformers, are not only illegal, but are also very dangerous.
The disconnections started on Tuesday 2 June and the resident if Sunway took their protest to the streets by barricading roads and burning tyres. It is clear their dismay with their living conditions has reached boiling point.
The DA is worried that protesters also made it clear they will not stop until they receive proper connections. This is a ticking time-bomb, caused by ANC neglect of our poorest communities.
The DA urgently appeals to the Mothiba and councillors who are turning a blind eye to the continuing corruption in the municipality and lack of proper service delivery in the area to adhere to the complaints of Sunway residents.
The DA will press for an urgent meeting to make submissions to the Mayor directly.
