By Bridget Masango MP, DA Gauteng Constituency Head – Nkungwini:
The Democratic Alliance Women’s Network (DAWN) recently launched its Whistle Against Abuse Campaign in Bronkhorstspruit.
Led by DA councillor, Doris Mnguni, and myself, dozens of activists took to the streets of Zithobeni to hand out blue whistles to the local community.
Women were encouraged to use the whistles to alert friends and neighbours of any instances of abuse.
DAWN also encouraged the community to fight the scourge of abuse against women and children 365 days a year and not just during the 16 days of activism.
Many women in Zithobeni came forward with personal tales of abuse and suffering; most often at the hands of partners or someone close to them.
DAWN will be taking this campaign to other parts of Gauteng in the hope that awareness will encourage victims and those close to them to help break the cycle of abuse.
In particular as we head into Youth month and Child Protection week, we must all fight for safer and more caring communities.
