By David van Vuuren, DA Chief Whip in the Free State Provincial Legislature:
ESKOM has allegedly cut the electricity supply to two clinics and the local sewerage works in the Mafube Local Municipality due to non-payment. Mafube was one of the municipalities that had its equitable share withheld by National Treasury due to financial mismanagement and failure to pay bulk suppliers. The municipality owes ESKOM almost R40 million.
As a result the sewerage works are now overflowing, polluting the surrounding environment and placing nearby residents at a health risk of infection, never mind the stench. See pictures here.
The DA is extremely concerned that ESKOM has disconnected electricity supply to these municipal facilities since it is on record that it would not disconnect electricity supply.
The municipality has also failed to pay the municipal workers timeously over the last three months, largely as a result of having its equitable share withheld. I have submitted questions to Finance MEC, Elzabe Rockman, in how Provincial Treasury will intervene in the municipality to prevent a total collapse.
This is yet another example of how the ANC at various levels of government are sabotaging service delivery due to inherent culture of financial mismanagement.
ESKOM should do the right thing and immediately reconnect electricity supply to these clinics and the sewerage plant.
