By Jack Bloom MPL, DA Gauteng Shadow MEC for Health:
The Gauteng Health Department needs to respond to allegations of neglect at the Psychiatric ward of the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Hospital.
According to a YouTube video posted anonymously on Twitter by @AzizAnon58687, a “disgruntled family member” is disgusted with the way the hospital handles mentally ill people.
His/her son was tied up for three days in casualty waiting for the psychiatric ward.
Other allegations include:
- The gate at Ward 487 is held together by a restraint that is supposed to be used on patients;
- The ward is infested with cockroaches;
- Sick males and females are mixed together in the ward; and
- Things are broken in the ward, which has bare walls and has been waiting for renovations for 10 years.
According to the complainant: “Something needs to be done so I made this video. People need to see how neglected and dilapidated a hospital ward of psychiatric patients looks.”

I am concerned by these allegations that need to be investigated.
Mentally ill patients are very vulnerable and need special care and a decent environment for treatment.

As a disgruntled family member, I am disgusted with the way the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Hospital handles mentally ill people. My son was seen in their casualty and had to be tied up in casualty awaiting in the psych ward. He waited for 3 days and was tied up with no help from staff in casualty. When he was transferred to ward 260 things were a little better. He was eventually transferred to ward 487 after 1 week, but I was disgusted with the state of the ward. Firstly, the gate is held together with what I was later told is a restraint that is supposed to be used for patients. The ward is infested with cockroaches and there are just empty spaces with bland walls. The ward is scary and mixed with sick males and females. Things are falling apart in the ward. I complained to the staff who told me that the ward has been awaiting renovations for the last 10 years and advised me to lodge a formal complaint. I made attempts to get my point across of the terrible conditions that my poor son had to stay under but no one cared. It’s sad that the Gen has deriorated to this. I am told that my son may stay here for up to a month and this breaks my heart. Something needs to be done so I made this video. People need to see how neglected and dilapidated a hospital ward of psychiatric patients looks. I wonder if the people in government or any person for that matter, would like to let their own family member to stay in such a place. I have no medical aid, so we don’t have a choice. I am at the mercy of this system. Something needs to be done.
