Load-shedding Deaths at Letaba hospital: DA lays criminal charges

By Langa Bodlani MPL, DA Limpopo Spokesperson on Health:

The Democratic Alliance has today laid charges of criminal negligence against the Limpopo Department of Health at Polokwane Police Station.

This after two patients died yesterday when load-shedding cut off their life-support machines.

Three patients were on ventilators in the Letaba hospital near Tzaneen on Wednesday evening when Eskom’s power failure struck the area.  Two of the patients died after a generator failed to start after running out of diesel.

The DA has established that an unfueled or faulty generator is a recurring problem at this hospital.

This is in fact the fifth time that the hospital’s generator did not have enough fuel to keep crucial life support machines going.

It is scandalous that this gross negligence led to the death of two people. The Limpopo Department of Health is accountable and must put measures in place to ensure that all generators function all the time when needed.
