By Jacques Smalle MPL, DA Limpopo Provincial Leader:
The Democratic Alliance in Limpopo is shocked to learn of the election yesterday of Tlhalefi Mashamaite as full time Member of the Mayoral Council of the Waterberg District Municipality responsible for budget and treasury.
Mashamaite is the former mayor of the troubled Mogalakwena municipality who was fired by the ANC last week. The ANC claimed intentions to better service delivery as reason for his axing.
The appointment of Mashamaite is an insult to the voters in the Waterberg District.
His election comes while the wounds of poor service delivery in Mogalakwena are still fresh. Mashamaite has been making headlines for the past two years with allegations of the violation of municipal finance systems and mismanagement of municipal finances.
Investigations into the financial affairs of the municipality during his stay in Mogalakwena and allegations of financial mismanagement of the mayoral budget vote make him unfit for public office.
Yet, the ANC had no problem in appointing him today in a position of influence where he will have control over municipal funds.
His poor governance left a dysfunctional fragmented municipality with a divided council.
It boggles the mind that the ANC fires a man one week, suggesting that the party wants to better service delivery, yet deploys him again into public office of influence a week later.
The fact is that Mashamaite was in charge of a municipality where irregular expenditure took place and he is grossly unfit to serve as mayoral committee member of any municipality.
Yet again, the ruling party misses an opportunity to eradicate corruption and fraud within the public service. This is a cadre deployment at its best, and the DA believes that this does not bode well for service delivery in the Waterberg District.
