Mozambique National dies in police custody in Daveyton

By Michele Clarke MPL, DA Gauteng Community Safety Spokesperson:

A Mozambique national, Mr Justice Malati, died yesterday while in police custody at the Daveyton Police station.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) visited the Malati family last night who explained that they found Mr Malati deceased and still lying in his holding cell when visiting him at the station yesterday.

The station commander was unable to offer an explanation for his death and indicated that a post mortem would need to be conducted.

The DA will be requesting an urgent investigation into this case by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) on behalf of the family.

I have also written to Gauteng Premier David Makhura, the Provincial Police Commissioner and the MEC for Safety and Security to assist the family in getting the answers they need.

Our sincerest condolences go out to the family and friends of Mr Malati and we hope that the relevant authorities will do everything in their power to get to the bottom of this tragedy.

Any negligence which may be unearthed during the investigation should be met with the full might of the law.
