Next round of Western Cape Government Internet Competition

By Alan Winde, Minister of Economic Opportunities:

Alan Winde, Minister of Economic Opportunities, is calling on the province’s most innovative residents to enter the next round of the Western Cape Government’s Internet Competition.

The competition closes on Friday, 12 June 2015.

Minister Winde said the winners would be announced towards the end of June.

The competition was devised by the Department of Economic Development and Tourism.

There are two categories, namely internet Innovation and “How the internet has improved my business”.

The internet innovation category calls on contestants to present an original idea where the internet could be used to promote social and economic benefits in their neighbourhood.

Residents in this category must include details of how much it would cost to bring the idea to life.

Entrants must outline how the concepts will work in a 500 – 800 word description.

The successful innovator will win R10 000.

In the second category, “How the internet has improved my business”, entrants will have to motivate how the internet has improved their lives or businesses. The winner will clinch R2 000.

Minister Winde said the competition aimed to highlight the impact of the public WiFi zones put in place by the Western Cape Government.

The winners of the previous round were announced in May. In the internet innovation category, the winning ideas were WiFi to improve public lighting and an online platform to facilitate smart funding agreements between students and investors.

“The quality of entries in the previous round was high, we had some innovative ideas and excellent case studies of how residents are using the internet to grow their businesses. I am looking forward to another set of great proposals during this round,” said Minister Winde.
