Nquthu shooting: Learner safety must be prioritised

By Mbali Ntuli, MPL, DA KZN Spokesperson on Education:

The DA in KZN extends its deepest sympathies to the families of a Nquthu deputy school principal and a young learner who lost their lives yesterday after being shot by gunmen who stormed a classroom at the school.

We condemn this senseless and barbaric act in the strongest terms and hope the full might of the justice system will be exercised against the perpetrators.

The DA welcomes the KZN Education department’s commitment to ensuring that the learners who witnessed this tragedy will receive trauma counselling.

This dreadful incident has again highlighted the safety of our children.  That something so awful can take place in a classroom in full view of many young children is deeply disturbing and requires serious consideration around security at our schools.

The DA is committed to raising this important matter at the next KZN Education portfolio committee so that solutions can be found.
