By Safiyia Stanfley, MPL, DA Provincial Spokesperson on Sport, Arts and Culture:
I will submit written questions today to the MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Lebogang Motlhaping to ascertain what exact support has been given and what is still to be given to Sport Focus schools in the province.
While the Democratic Alliance welcomes the initiative by the Departments of Education and Sport, Arts and Culture to identify sport focus schools, we are concerned that no support to date has been given to the schools.
In March this year the departments of Sport, Arts and Culture, and Education, signed agreements with the Northern Cape High School and Kimberley Technical High School as sport focus schools.
A total of 10 sporting codes including football, rugby, netball and cricket were identified and shared between the schools.
It is concerning today that the two schools continue to scramble for sponsorships and donors both from parents and outside patrons to sustain the sporting codes at the schools.
Parents must pay for almost everything from kits, food and accommodation when their children participate in sporting events.
It is almost three months and nothing seems to have come from these agreements.
