By Cllrs Bev Wood & Sharne Jacobs, Great Kei Municipality:
The Democratic Alliance in Great Kei Municipality are delighted to advise that the vitally important Schafli Road is now under repair by the service provider appointed to site by the Department of Public Works and Roads. This means that there will be Stop and Go delays on the road until the repairs have been effected. We request drivers to please be considerate towards other road users and to co-operate and be patient with the repair crews.
Regular maintenance of our roads network is crucial to sustain and grow the economic opportunities that tourism brings to this area. A job gives our people the freedom to break out of the poverty cycle.
This road is the link to Chintsa East, Chintsa West and all of the other tourism destinations, wedding venues, game farms and holiday resorts along the popular Jikeleza Route. The volume of traffic using Schafli Road has increased dramatically over the past five years, with large numbers of residents moving from the stresses of city life to take advantage of this peaceful area.
During the past two years, many vehicles have been damaged due to the size and frequency of the potholes on this stretch of road, that worsen each time there is heavy rain.
We wish to thank the Department of Public Works and Roads for finally hearing our cries and making the repairs to this road a priority. Thanks must also go to DA MPL Vicky Knoetze from the Eastern Cape Legislature in Bhisho for taking the fight to the provincial parliament for us.
