The DA will investigate why Thlabane West residents’ right to clean water is ignored

By Gys Smit, DA Provincial Deputy Chairperson and Rustenburg Councillor:

The DA in Rustenburg participates in an in-depth investigation into the infrequent water supply and, in some cases, the poor water quality that residents of Thlabane West (Geelhoutpark, Meriteng and the high lying areas in Rustenburg), experience.

The residents of Thlabane West, took their protest to the streets this week and showed their discontent by burning tyres and trees and damaging new traffic lights and roads built on the RRT (Rustenburg Rapid Transport) system.

The DA will never support any criminal behaviour but has empathy with these people, who complain that when they do receive water it is brown and smelly.

Residents also complain that there are frequent, unannounced water interruptions which have in the past lasted for more than 48 hours.

The right to water is embedded in the Constitution and it is a service that the government has to render. The Rustenburg Municipality has failed to comply with legislation and as a result failed the people of Thlabane.

The Rustenburg area is suffering due to mismanagement and unqualified contractors who have to oversee maintenance and processes.
