Unqualified civil servants pose risk to service delivery

By Lebo More MPL, DA Gauteng Spokesperson on Petitions:

In a written response to a DA question MEC Jacob Mamabolo today revealed that 20 employees in the City of Tshwane faked their academic qualifications.

The response further revealed that the City of Joburg has never conducted any qualification audit on its staff and management in the past ten years, despite employing thousands of people both at a junior level right through to senior managerial level.

The DA condemns the employment of under-qualified individuals particularly due to the high unemployment rate of qualified deserving potentials that are locked out of the system. The employment of the connected few to key positions, threatens the growth of our province and communities.

A fair process in recruitment processes coupled with qualification audits of civil servants in the all spheres of government is needed. Employment opportunities should be based on merit and qualification and every qualifying applicant deserves fair and equal opportunity.

This will ensure accountability and improve service delivery, especially in municipalities across Gauteng.

The DA will continue to expose unqualified officials until such time that the public service puts people first and serves the needs of those who need it most.
