By Safiyia Stanfley, MPL, DA Provincial Spokesperson on Sport, Arts and Culture:
The Democratic Alliance congratulates the Northern Cape Under-18 hockey girls team for reaching the finals in the Inter-Provincial Tournament.
The girls beat KZN Coastal 1-0 in the semi-final and lost 5-1 to South Gauteng B in the finals over the weekend.
The tournament was organized by the South African Schools Hockey Association an affiliate of the South African Hockey Association (SAHA).
While the team did not win the tournament we applaud their outstanding performance for reaching the finals and next year we believe they will be crowned champions.
The DA remains resolute that schools sport helps reduce crime rates, also promotes discipline and good habits that benefit the participants in other areas of their daily lives.
Sports require discipline, teamwork, physical fitness, and strategy. These skills benefit participants in educational pursuits as well as in future careers and will ultimately promote greater mental health.
The DA is concerned that School Sport in the province still needs attention and there is a huge area for development.
The team’s success is further proof that there is talent in the province and that with adequate support and resources athletes will flourish.
