Residents of Sun City Village in Mpumalanga are living in inhumane conditions

By Bosman Grobler MPL, DA spokesperson on CoGTA:

The DA has learned that residents of Sun City Village near Ermelo, Mpumalanga, are living in inhumane conditions. It was found that the sewer has been flowing in the streets for the past 3 months.

This is reportedly caused by blocked drains. The municipality dug trenches five years ago with the intention to install sewerage networks around the village, to eliminate this issue, but the trenches were dug and then abandoned.

It is clear that the root cause of the problem lies with the municipality’s inability to properly administer its financial and supply chain management systems.

What is most concerning is that children are playing near the open and over-flowing trenches, roads in the area are fast becoming impassable and the community is faced with serious health implications because of this mess.

In order the to prevent an outbreak of a disease this matter must urgently be dealt with.

The DA will write to the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Refilwe Mtsweni to urgently intervene. We will further lodge a complaint with the Human Rights Commission, for investigation.

A DA led government will ensure that we build a South Africa where quality services are delivered to all. A South Africa where the dignity of every citizen is restored and protected.
