Rooiwal waste water: DA opens case against Tshwane City Manager

By Janho Engelbrecht MPL, DA Gauteng Spokesperson on Environmental Affairs and Hannes Coetzee, DA Tshwane Ward 96 Councillor

The Democratic Alliance has today laid charges against Tshwane Municipal Manager, Jason Ngobeni, at the Pretoria North Police Station for blatantly violating section 151 (i)(j) of the National Water Act.

Last week, the Rooiwal water treatment plant north of Tshwane began to expel high volumes of raw sewage sludge into the Apies River endangering the lives of thousands of residents in Hammanskraal and surrounding areas.

It has also had a massive impact on local farmers who use this water for crop irrigation.

This sewage sludge build up has continued to flow into the Apies River which feeds the Themba Dam that provides Hammanskraal with drinking water.

No intervention by the City of Tshwane (CoT) to avert this crisis has taken place thus far.

The situation is akin to a humanitarian crisis and blame must solely be attributed to Municipal Manager, Jason Ngobeni, as a tender to upgrade this dilapidated facility is 17 months overdue.

Water tankers must be brought to Hammanskraal and surrounding areas as soon as possible to prevent residents from becoming ill as a result of drinking this contaminated water.

The DA will also write to the Blue Scorpions and request a full investigation into the matter take place.
