Sheriff attaches Gariep council assets

By Cllr Marina van Zyl, Gariep caucus leader:

Yesterday (subs:  Tuesday, 28 July), the sheriff in Burgersdorp attached municipal assets due to the non-payment of the Gariep municipality’s previous accounting system.

Data M Computer Software CC has been owed money by Gariep municipality since the termination date of their services in June 2011.  The arrogance of the municipal manager, Thembinkosi Mawonga, to not honour this payment under his administration has left the municipality in shame.

The amount that triggered this attachment is R400 000.  This amount, if paid back in 2011, would have been considerably less.

This municipality runs the risk of even more attachments with it owing its creditors roughly R65 million.

Gariep municipality, consisting of the towns of Burgersdorp, Steynsburg, Venterstad and Oviston, has a history of poor administration.

DA-run municipalities are free of financial maladministration.  We stand for opportunity-societies where a clean, healthy budget prevails that ensure communities get the service delivery they need and deserve.

The DA will continue to demand accountability from officials in the Gariep municipality.
