By Athol Trollip (MPL), Mayoral candidate: Nelson Mandela Bay:
The downward spiral of the ANC support in Nelson Mandela Bay has continued to play out in the Ward 30 by election held in KwaMagxaki and Veeplaas yesterday (Wednesday 19th August)
In 2014 the ANC polled 75% of the vote in this ward. In this by election they have now collapsed to 41%.
This result if replicated in similar wards means that the ANC cannot win a majority in 2016.
In contrast the DA vote has tripled from 2.95% in 2011 to 9% in 2015.
Our march to City Hall in 2016 is firmly on track.
In the 2014 General Election the ANC received 48% of the vote in Nelson Mandela Bay while the DA received 42% of the vote.
The DA growth in this by election coupled with the UDM victory at 49% means that the ANC hegemony has been shattered in a former ANC stronghold ward.
It’s game on.
This by election result will send shockwaves through the ANC. They are now on a slippery slope as they have lost their second consecutive by election within a year where they had previously held a comfortable majority.
This result is significant in the broader context because it takes the DA a step closer to winning the Nelson Mandela Metro in 2016 and ushering in a new era of freedom, fairness and opportunity.
The consistent growth the DA received in this ANC stronghold ward reinforces the swing to the Democratic Alliance and the unstoppable desire for change in Nelson Mandela Bay.
I would like to thank the voters of ward 30 as well as our candidate Eric Jinikwe and the ‘Ngqura’ Constituency Leader, Nqaba Bhanga, and his team of dedicated activists for their hard work and commitment to growing the DA in this ward.
