DA lays charges against Merafong Mayor

By Ina Cilliers MPL, DA Constituency Head: Merafong:

The DA has laid charges against Merafong Mayor, Maphefo Mogale-Letsie, for contravening section 151 (i) and (j) of the National Water Act, for exposing Merafong’s residents to contaminated and harmful drinking water.

In May 2015 the main power supply cable to the Wedela waste water plant was stolen, causing 1,5 million litres of raw sewage spilling into the Leeuspruit and Klipdrift Dam per day.

Due to non-payment by the municipality, the security company contracted to guard the treatment plant terminated their services – and as a result the plant is being stripped of expensive equipment.

The cost to repair the peripheral damage to this site is estimated at R850 000. The municipality has both cable and capacity to reinstall it – but without adequate security, this will prove to be an exercise in futility.

While Mayor Mogale-Letsie sits back and allows the situation to spiral out of control, people’s lives are being placed in serious danger.

The Gauteng Provincial Government, particularly the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), needs to intervene before there is an outbreak of waterborne diseases in Merafong.

I will write to COGTA MEC, Jacob Mamabolo and request that he intervene as a matter of urgency.
