By Jack Bloom MPL, DA Gauteng Shadow MEC for Health:
I welcome the action taken by Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu against nurses at Rahima Moosa Hospital who allegedly ignored a patient while she screamed for help and later gave birth to a dead baby.
This type of thing happens far too often in Gauteng hospitals.
Strict discipline should be applied as well as measures to improve staff attitudes towards patients.
Nursing is a caring profession, and it unfathomable that any nurse could stand by while a patient is in distress.
The Nursing Council should also be involved in lifting standards in this area.
