MEC must investigate mismanagement at Mmabana Cultural Foundation

By Dr Tutu Faleni (MPL), Democratic Alliance North West, Spokesperson for Education, Sports and Culture:

The recent annual financial reports of the Mmabana Arts, Culture and Sports Foundation (MACSF) which revealed mismanagement and a failure to develop artistry in the North West. The DA condemns this mismanagement as a wasted opportunity to upskill people and develop talents that lead to better opportunities in life.

The MACSF is a non-profit organization established to promote and develop arts, culture and indoor artistic sports activities in the province. This foundation has a wonderful history of grooming artists who have made it big in the South Africa television industry

The sharp decline in financial management is a concern that need to be addressed immediately.

The financial reports indicate that this foundation has failed to comply with the legislative framework of the Public Financial Management Act. It becomes clear that the MACSF’s management lacks the competence to establish a proper financial system.

The inability of the current management to rectify deficits further exposes the organization to losing donors. This will be a disaster for the organisation, and will limit the development of artists in our province. We cannot allow that to happen.

The DA calls upon the MEC of Culture Ms Tebogo Modise to take action against any misconduct and mismanagement of the foundation. The department must investigate, must design a financial turnaround plan, and must deploy officials to implement it.

Modise must immediately start a process that will rescue Mmabana Foundation from collapse.

The DA believes that arts and culture can bring people together in new ways and organisations like the MACSF must be protected for the benefit of all.
