ANC blocks DA motion on non payments of NGO’s

By Jacques Smalle MPL, DA Provincial Leader:

A DA motion with notice on the inability of the social development department to pay NGOs on time and the impact on vulnerable communities, was turned down in the house by the ANC indicating that the matter does not deserve to be debated in the house according to the ANC.

These social welfare NGO’s cater for the homeless, orphans, bed ridden patients and elderly people but are now facing closure due to the department’s failure to pay their subsidies in the last three terms.

This is proof that the ANC government doesn’t see any crisis in the non payments of these NGO’s but continues to fail our people. The DA has already requested the Human Rights Commission to probe the closure of some of these NGO’s across the province and urges the department to pay all the outstanding monies with immediate effect.

We will continue to push for the motion to be debated in the next sitting in ensuring that the matter is attended to with immediate effect and to hold the responsible officials accountable for the delay.

The DA will be writing a letter to the portfolio committee chairperson of the department to urgently summon MEC Joyce Mashamba and the HOD once again to appear before the committee to explain the withdrawal and the delay of payments.
