DA concerned over poor attendance at Roodepoort Primary

By Khume Ramulifho MPL DA Gauteng Shadow MEC for Education:

The DA notes with concern that only 643 of Roodepoort Primary School’s 1200 learners have returned to class today, and calls on both education MEC Panyaza Lesufi and the absent learners’ parents to ensure their attendance as a matter of urgency.

It is of critical importance that all learners are back in class and preparing for the Annual National Assessment later this month, and that the dispute between aggrieved parents and the education department is settled amicably.

Learner’s interests and their future must be put before those of others.

To this end the DA urges all stakeholders encourage learners participation in the curriculum support program, which will assist learners to catch-up with the school curriculum.

While the DA respects the requests of parents of 61 learners who requested transfers to other schools, we request that they reconsider this request until the academic year draws to a close, thus minimizing disruption.

The DA will continue to monitor the situation and engage with the respective stakeholders.
